Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is a procedure carried out to remove the damaged or diseased pulp and thus retain the tooth. When performed well, it can have high success rates, preventing loss of the tooth.

Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment or therapy is a safe and common procedure carried out in order to save or retain a tooth which may be severely compromised. At the core of your tooth is the dental pulp which is comprised of blood vessels and nerves which provide nutrition to the tooth. The pulp maintains tooth vitality. If you experience sensitivity to hot or cold stimuli, discomfort on biting, or you notice swelling, this may be a sign that the pulp has become inflamed or infected. This may be due to decay, cracks, trauma, deep fillings or tooth wear. If you experience any of these symptoms, you should arrange to see your dentist. If the pulp is irreversibly damaged or has died, your dentist will most likely recommend root canal treatment. Treatment is designed to remove bacteria from the root canal system and prevent reinfection. Root canal treatment allows you to retain your natural tooth and therefore promotes normal function. Your natural tooth usually feels and functions better when compared to a replacement denture or an implant.

How is root canal treatment performed?

Root canal treatment can be carried out in a gentle and relatively pain-free manner. At Focus Endodontics, we use the latest technology and the most advanced techniques available to us in order to ensure you have a relaxing and pain-free experience.

Treatment is performed under local anaesthesia and with the use of a rubber dam to ensure the tooth is kept free from contamination. The damaged or diseased pulp is removed. The root canal system is then cleaned and disinfected and filled with a root canal filling.

While some cases may be completed in a single visit, others may require multiple appointments. The length of treatment time will depend on varied factors including the complexity of the case and will be discussed with you during your consultation.

What happens after treatment?

Once root canal treatment has been completed, Dr Aggarwala will place a temporary filling to seal the tooth and will refer you back to your dentist. A report will be sent to your dentist outlining the treatment that was carried out. Your dentist will recommend that a permanent restoration be placed to protect the structural integrity of the tooth, restore it to its’ full function, and prevent leakage.

It is recommended you return for your 6-month review so the tooth and surrounding tissues can be assessed for healing.
